Death Valley Photo Suite for Site 6

Geologic context:  Two hypabyssal phases occur here, a slightly coarser mafic phase and a finer grained more felsic phase.  Enclaves of the mafic within the felsic such as seen in the left portion of the representative image from the model suite below may be xenoliths or they may be due to cataclastic strain. Both lithologies are intensely fractured. A strong preferred direction of fractures, many of which are slip planes is evident and is sub-parallel to the view direction in the image below. Some fractures in this preferred orientation set offset the contact between the two lithologies and in the mafic material also have epidote mineralization along the fracture, often with striae and/or slickensides.

View to the southwest. Tie points provided in the accompanying Excel file are as follows: 1 is the intersection of the two segments of the folding ruler, 2 is horizontal and to the left, and 3 is above in the air.
