Abstract

Purpose: To create a case study workbook in the format of an Open Educational Resource for use by firstyear audiology students as a supplement to clinical skills learned in the classroom. The goal is to enhance students’ clinical confidence and supplement their classroom learning by providing accessible case studies and addressing a significant gap in audiology education.

Method: The workbook is published in an Open Educational Resource format through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s access to the Pressbooks platform and is accessible at no charge. Included cases were selected to provide students with materials that are relevant to what is learned in the first year of a graduate audiology program. Cases A-K are presented in a whole-case format while Cases L-T are presented in a serial-cue format.

Results: The workbook contains 20 cases, representing 11 etiologies in the whole-case format and 9 in the serial-cue format. Students will monitor their progress by completing self-evaluations at Confidence Checkpoints before beginning the workbook, after completing Cases A-K, before beginning Cases L-T, and following completion of the workbook.

Discussion: While this capstone does not include data collection, future work could assess the workbook’s effectiveness by integrating a web-based evaluation form. Future projects could also consider the addition of cases that focus on the areas of pediatrics, implantable devices, and vestibular audiology as these are more appropriate for use by second- and third-year students.
