34 Mental and Emotional Burnout

Common Stressors:

  • Always Being “On” – The work never really stops on a farm or ranch, which makes rest feel like a luxury.
  • Emotional Weight of Decision-Making – Every choice, from animal care to financial planning, can carry huge consequences.
  • Ongoing Financial Strain – Debt, weather setbacks, and uncertain markets keep stress levels high.
  • Lack of Recognition or Progress – When hard work doesn’t lead to visible results, it’s easy to feel discouraged.
  • Working Through Pain or Illness – Many push through physical and emotional discomfort instead of taking time to recover.

Addressing Stressors:

  • Take Breaks Before You “Earn” Them – You don’t have to be completely burned out to step away- incorporate a regular break into your daily schedule.
  • Mix Up Your Routine – Switching tasks can reduce mental fatigue and improve focus- discuss a new routine with any workers around the farm or ranch.
  • Celebrate Small Wins – A successful day, fixed fence, or healthy calf all count as points of success for a work day—acknowledge them.
  • Talk It Out – Sharing your stress with a friend, family member, or peer can take a huge weight off.
  • Ask for Help Early – You don’t have to carry it all- bring someone in before you’re overwhelmed or stressed.

Mental Health Impacts:

  • Emotional Exhaustion – Feeling detached, hopeless, or like you’re just going through the motions.
  • Irritability & Mood Swings – Short tempers and frustration can become more common as you age.
  • Loss of Motivation – It may feel harder to get out of bed, start projects, or stay engaged.
  • Withdrawal from Social Circles – You may find yourself avoiding people or even those you care about- especially in your immediate family.

Addressing Mental Health:

  • Create a Routine That Includes Recovery – Build in quiet time or activities that help you recharge.
  • Stay Physically Active Outside of Work – Even light movement like walking or stretching can reduce stress.
  • Check in with Yourself – Take a moment daily to ask, “How am I doing?”
  • Consider Speaking With a Professional – A rural counselor or telehealth option can help you sort through what’s weighing you down. Talking about your feelings is NOT a weakness- it is a strength!
