Occupation for Health
My capstone and pressbook project promote the foundational occupational therapy principle that participation in meaningful occupations supports overall health and well-being. Farmers and ranchers rely on physically demanding work for both their livelihood and sense of identity, yet they often face barriers such as musculoskeletal injuries and environmental stressors that limit their ability to engage in these occupations. Through the development of a pressbook, I am providing accessible information on common injuries, symptoms, prevention strategies, and next steps following an injury. This resource directly supports the continued occupational engagement of the agricultural community by empowering individuals to recognize hazards and take proactive steps to maintain their physical and mental health, enabling them to safely continue in the work they value.
Professional Growth
This capstone experience (as well as the pressbook) has significantly contributed to my professional development by strengthening my clinical reasoning, communication, and interprofessional collaboration skills. Working alongside providers at Gothenburg Health and CS-CASH has given me insight into the unique challenges faced by rural populations, particularly those in farming and ranching. Conducting workplace evaluations, analyzing injury data, and presenting findings have enhanced my ability to synthesize information and advocate effectively. Creating the pressbook required me to take on a leadership role in knowledge dissemination and community education, allowing me to grow as a compassionate occupational therapist prepared to serve underserved rural communities- especially farmers and ranchers!
Translational Science
A central focus of this pressbook has been translating current evidence into practical tools for the agricultural community. While extensive research exists on musculoskeletal injuries, ergonomic safety, and mental health in rural populations, this information is often not accessible to the individuals who need it most. The pressbook bridges that gap by converting academic findings into easy-to-understand resources tailored to the lived experiences of farmers and ranchers. This tool serves as a clear example of knowledge translation, ensuring that evidence-based strategies are not only available but are usable and actionable for those working in agriculture, ultimately promoting safety, health, and sustainability in their everyday lives.
