17 Livestock Handling Risks
Common Hazards:
- Kicks & Head-Butts – Livestock may react defensively when startled or feeling threatened.
- Crush Injuries – Working in tight spaces increases the risk of being pinned against gates or fences.
- Falls & Tripping Risks – Muddy, icy, or uneven ground can cause slips, especially when handling animals.
- Zoonotic Diseases – Close contact with livestock increases exposure to diseases like brucellosis, leptospirosis, and ringworm.
- Escape & Stampede Risks – Improperly secured enclosures or sudden movements can lead to dangerous situations.
Addressing Hazards:
- Stay in an Animal’s Field of Vision – Avoid standing directly behind livestock where they are more likely to kick.
- Use Proper Handling Equipment – Gates, chutes, and crowding pens should be in good condition and appropriately sized.
- Wear Protective Gear – Gloves, steel-toed boots, and long sleeves help reduce injury risks.
- Keep Handling Areas Clear & Dry – Secure fencing, repair broken gates, and minimize slip hazards.
- Move Animals Calmly & Consistently – Avoid loud noises and sudden movements that can startle livestock.
Mental Health Impacts:
- Fear & Anxiety After Incidents – Past injuries can lead to hesitation and stress when working with livestock.
- Work-Related Fatigue – Physically demanding animal handling can increase exhaustion and slow reaction times.
- Emotional Toll of Animal Loss – Injured or sick animals can cause distress, especially for ranchers who rely on their livestock.
Addressing Mental Health:
- Learn from Past Incidents – Adjust handling techniques to improve future safety.
- Seek Support from Fellow Ranchers – Talking with others can provide reassurance and advice.
- Recognize Warning Signs in Animals – Understanding animal body language reduces unnecessary stress and injuries.
- Prioritize Rest & Recovery – Taking breaks and maintaining personal well-being improves focus and reaction time.
