Overview

Explosions occur in grain elevators, feed mills, flour mills, and corn-milling sites.  Below is a collage of images which show structural damage caused by grain dust explosions.  You can click on it to view a larger size which will appear in a new tab.

 

In 2017, feed grain dust led to 7 explosions, 5 deaths and 12 injuries in the US.


These deaths and injuries can be prevented by

good maintenance and housekeeping.


 

Learning Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  1. Prevent grain dust fires and explosions by:
    • Understanding the causes of grain dust explosions and fires.
    • Creating an emergency action plan.
    • Implementing work permit and procedures.
    • Ensuring good housekeeping Assuring preventative maintenance.
  2. Prevent injuries and fatalities due to grain engulfment by:
    • Understanding and implementing training requirements.
    • Adhering to entry requirement into grain storage structures.
    • Understanding the training requirements for contractors.
