4 Sleep Health
What is it?
Sleep health refers to the ability to fall asleep and stay asleep for an adequate amount of time, feeling alert throughout the day, and feeling satisfied with sleep (Sleep Health Journal).
Sleep hygiene refers to the positive sleep habits that promote consistent, well-rested sleep (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022).
Why is it important?
Sleep is essential for humans to function on a day-to-day basis. Getting consistent healthy sleep is important for individuals’ cognition, mental health, physical health, productivity, mood and overall quality of life (Ramar et al., 2021). Sleep deficiency can lead to having trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling emotions, paying attention, and remembering things. These can interfere with school, work, and overall functioning (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2022).
Adults should get 7-9 hours of sleep each night (Hirshkowitz et al., 2015).
