20 Leisure Activity

What is it?

Leisure activities are defined as activities pursued for one’s own sake and for fun and enjoyment, although many activities that might be considered leisure also have secondary health benefits. Leisure activities are sorted into groups based on their specific characteristics, including competitive sports, outdoor activities, cultural pursuits, and social interactions. (Henderson, 2017).

Why is it important?

Satisfaction and engagement in leisure activities is known to increase well-being and overall life satisfaction. Consistently meaningful engagement in leisure activities can also lead to an increase in job, familial, and marital satisfaction (Kuykendall, Boemerman, & Zhu, 2018). Engaging in leisure activities that are meaningful to a person can also help reduce their levels of stress. People who participate in leisure activities that surround physical health have higher levels of stress reduction when engaging in these types of activities, as opposed to sedentary activities. This is also true for people who participate in sedentary leisure activities (Corazon et al., 2010).
