An Overview of the FLOURISH Model

The purpose of the Facilitating Learning and Occupational Well-Being Using Research-Based Initiatives for Student Health (FLOURISH) model is to organize thinking about health and well-being, specifically for leaners. While FLOURISH was originally developed for occupational therapy students, many undergraduate, graduate, and professional students may benefit from the contents in the manual. This manual is organized into 6 sections (physical, mental, sociocultural, environmental, occupational, and balancing well-being), each that have three chapters of specific topics and strategies to enhancing health and well-being. This resource is not medical advice. Those with health conditions should seek advice from a qualified practitioner. Rather, the goal of this resource is to support students in their occupation of learning by discussing evidence-based strategies, that may promote health and well-being and support your learning journey.

In FLOURISH, a student is visually represented as a singular plant among others in a community garden. The plant is symbolic of a student in their community (or campus), engaging in a variety of occupations amongst other peers. One of the primary occupations of a student is engaging in learning activities and this is typically done in a community of learners. Components of the community garden surrounding the plant represent several factors the make up the person and environment, which in combination may support or hinder the occupations, activities, and roles of the individual.
