“Faith” is a Fine Invention

“Faith” is a fine invention

For Gentlemen who see![1]

But Microscopes[2] are prudent

In an Emergency!

  1. "see" is a referrence to God in this line. Dickinson also italicized it to show us that it has a deeper meaning. See footnote 2.
  2. The use of the word "Microscopes" is a referrence to science. Dickinson capitalized this word in the middle of the line to show us it has more meaning than just a physical microscope. She relates the "see" meaning God to this word microscopes to compare the ideas of religion and science.
