17 OPUS 5: MIDI Arrangement of Bach Invention

Assignment: Opus 5: MIDI arrangement of Bach Invention

Create an arrangement by starting with a standard midi file of a J. S. Bach Invention. An invention is a piece, usually for keyboard, that has two parts that are rhythmically independent of each other (referred to as ‘counterpoint’). You’ll be given a 3-part invention as a midi file for you to ‘cover’ making it your own “reimagined version”.

Use any MIDI edit techniques you’d like including program changes, additional tracks, split, copy, paste, global tracks for transposition and/or tempo, doubling, etc.

SUBMISSION: (1) Logic Pro project with description in the notepad.

Opus 5 Objectives

  1. Become proficient with midi editing techniques.
  2. Use MIDI controller parameters for musical effect (panning, velocity, program changes)
  3. Understand how to use sound fonts in a midi piece.

Tutorial for Opus 5
  1. After starting Logic Pro, use the File ➤ Open command to open the midi file of choice.
  2. You will see 3 tracks, all should be “Piano” – play the file to get a feel of how the three parts sound. Also try muting and/or soloing tracks to hear each of the tracks independently.
  3. Use any combination of the following approaches to turning this invention into your own arrangement:
    1. program changes – you could insert program changes within a track as long as the overall track connects to some kind of General MIDI instrument (external device or a “SoundFont” based instrument – this will be demoed in the video). Another approach is to split a track’s region as many times as you’d like and move the fragments to new tracks with the desired instrument(s) (also demoed on the video)
    2. Double parts – using the same splitting of a track’s region, you could copy/paste to a new track to ‘double’ the particular section
    3. Automate panning and volume
  4. Save the project!
