While all of the required resources for this course are free, you do need to prepare your music composition environment ahead of time for maximum success. You will need…
- Laptop or Desktop (macOS, Windows)
- Access to Canvas (all materials can be accessed there)
- This textbook available as a PressBooks webBook (thus you must be online to read the book)
- MuseScore – open source music notation software
Optional
- MIDI controller or synthesizer (useful for music input)
- iPad (useful fo reading the textbook) – NOTE: MuseScore does NOT work on iOS devices
https://www.MuseScore.org is the location of the software itself. – This is the site you should use!
https://www.MuseScore.com is the commercial site where you can use a paid subscription to download music arranged and authored by others.

Practice Assignment 0
Download and install MuseScore via https://www.musescore.org
- Open the app and create a new document via the Wizard – don’t worry of some of the questions are clear to you – when in doubt just accept the default.
- For the title use “My First Tune” and your first and last name for composer
- Save your document – note that the file extension will be “.mscz” – submit this to Canvas for Project 0
