Project 10: Overview – Sharing Notation and Other Formats
When you’ve composed a song, you want others to have it to enjoy! MuseScore offers several ways of sharing your music.
Summary: Create multiple versions of your Opus 1 song.
Features of this project – you’ll submit several documents
- Opus 1 as MuseScore Document WITH each part in its own tab
- Opus 1 as pdf (score only)
- Opus 1 as an audio file (score only)
- Opus 1 as a music XML file (score only)
How To… Project 10
Score & Parts
Your Opus 1 has at least two instruments. If you were to have an ensemble or band play your piece, each musician would need their own part (rather than the complete score).
Export Options
The File → Export menu item has many options that help you share your music.
The options you’ll use in this project are PDF, WAV (or mp3), and MusicXML
Music XML
“MusicXML was designed from the ground up for sharing sheet music files between applications, and for archiving sheet music files for use in the future. You can count on MusicXML files being readable and usable by a wide range of music notation applications, now and in the future. MusicXML complements the native file formats used by Finale and other programs, which are designed for rapid, interactive use.
Just as MP3 files have become synonymous with sharing recorded music, MusicXML files have become the standard for sharing interactive sheet music. With MusicXML you can create music in one program and share your results – back and forth – with people using other programs. Today more than 200 applications include MusicXML support.” – from http://www.musicxml.com
Music XML is a ‘markup language’ that is used to describe how music would be laid out on a page. You would never deal with a MusicXML file directly – rather you ‘export’ and ‘import’ such files to move your music from one software application to another.
To create a MusicXML version of your music look for either an “Export” or “Save As…” menu option.
To open a MusicXML file, use either “Open” or “Import”
The music XML formats allow importing and exporting musical content between various software apps. The most common format is ‘.musicxml’. You will never edit this type of file directly – rather you use your application software (i.e. MuseScore) to open / edit / save. The use of a musicxml would let you take a MuseScore document and work with it in a DAW such as Logic Pro or other notation apps such as Finale or Sibelius.
