Research Camp Objectives

    • At the end of the camp you should be able to:
      • Identify different types of information resources needed for college-level research
      • Develop an effective search strategy to locate relevant information sources.
      • Evaluate and select appropriate information sources for your research.
      • Understand how to document your research.

Module 1: The Heart of Research: Asking Interesting Questions
  • Identify the characteristics of an interesting research question.
  • Develop (or rework) an interesting research question on your chosen subject.
2:15-2:25 pm Break
2:25-2:45 pm Module 2. Developing good search strategies and database introduction 
  • Identifying keywords
  • Overview of NebraskAccess and Google Scholar
  • Locate & save two scholarly articles,
  • Download as PDFs and EMAIL THEM TO YOURSELF
 

 

 

 

2:45-3:15 pm Individual work time 
  • Rework Research Questions
  • Locate & save two scholarly articles- NebraskAccess and Google Scholar
  • Download as PDFs and EMAIL THEM TO YOURSELF
 
3:15- 3:45 pm Module 3, :   Reading and Evaluating sources
    • Reading with a Purpose: SQ3R (Scan, Question, Read, Respond, Review) 
    • Activity: Mapping the article
    • Analyze at least two SCHOLARLY articles based on your research question using the “Scholarship as Conversation” sheet.
3:45- 4:20 pm Individual work time 
  • Locate & save two scholarly articles- NebraskAccess and Google Scholar
  • Download as PDFs and EMAIL THEM TO YOURSELF

Research Camp Project Requirements

 

  1. Complete pre-evaluation assessment
  2. Develop a unique research question based on their topic
  3. Locate two articles that provide you with a good overview of your topic
  4. Analyze at least two SCHOLARLY articles based on your research question using the “Scholarship as Conversation” sheet.
  5. Individually create an abstract, identify key points, and a conclusion based on your research
  6. Create final project
  7. Complete post-evaluation assessment

 

Final Project 

 

Individuals will prepare a poster on their topic in the form of one slide created in Google Slides or PowerPoint and will deliver a 2-3-minute presentation of their findings at the end of the camp.

 

The presentation must contain the following required elements:

 

  • Title (you can be creative)
  • Name
  • School
  • An abstract including a research question
  • Key points or important facts from your article(s)
  • A conclusion and future research topics
  • Work cited list in MLA format

 

Individuals will

  • Create a Google Presentation or Powerpoint slide
  • Posters are due by June 6, 2024, 4:00 pm
