Module 2: What do Families Need to Feel Respected, Honored, and Valued?
Module Description:
When we talked to parents, family members, and family supporters about the NAFSCE competencies, the first two competencies—Respect, Honor, and Value Families and Embrace Equity Throughout Family Engagement—stood out as very essential to building successful partnerships. - How to build on families’ funds of knowledge to strengthen partnerships
Aligned National Association for Family, School, and Community Engagement (NAFSCE) Competencies:
- #1. Respect, Honor, and Value Families
- #2. Embrace Equity Throughout Family Engagement
- #4. Foster Community Partnerships for Learning and Family Wellbeing
Pre-Reflection
As you watch these videos, consider how our unique experiences matter and impact how we perceive the world and interact with others, and answer the questions below. It is valuable to reflect on our own lived experiences and consider how they may be similar or different from others. Reflecting on our experiences and learning about others’ experiences provides us with context for building relationships.

1. Think about your own experience with education.
- Did you feel comfortable and safe in your education? Did your family feel comfortable at the school?
- What were your relationships like with teachers/school staff and peers?
- What does learning mean to you and your family?
- What is something you would have changed about your education?
2. Think of a time when you felt others were not listening to you, you could not tell your side of the story or a time when your ideas were dismissed.
- How did you feel?
- If you were on the other side of the conversation, what would you have done to feel heard?
