Module 5: What Does a Meaningful Individualized Education Program (IEP) Process Involve?
Module Description:
The individualized education program (IEP) provides a roadmap for the team to support student success. By honoring and valuing families and communicating regularly, we can create a more welcoming environment for families that allows us to co-construct and support student learning. In this module, you will learn about:
- Tips for preparing families to be active partners in the development of an IEP
- Strategies for leading effective IEP meetings
- Encouraging self-advocacy through student-led IEP meetings
- Practices for shared implementation and progress monitoring

#5. Co-Construct Learning Opportunities with Families
Pre-Reflection
You are told that you need to go to an important event on your own where decisions will be made about a family member or friend you care deeply about. You are given the location and time you need to arrive, but no information about who will be there or what will happen at the event.
- How might you feel before going?
- How might you feel when you were at the event?
- Would it make a difference if someone you trusted was there, welcomed you, and supported you throughout the event?
- How might you feel different if you were given information about who would be there, what would happen, and invited to bring a close friend?
You can ask these questions to another person to explore how people might respond differently in these situations. For some, doing something on their own can be exciting, whereas for others, it might feel intimidating, overwhelming, or awkward.
