Introduction and Purpose
Introduction
This book represents the culmination of a 14-week doctoral capstone project aimed at informing the development of a student-run free clinic for the Occupational Therapy Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Within these pages contains the organizational planning and program materials necessary for the implementation of this clinic. While the content reflects a proposed model developed over the course of this immersive experience, it is important to note that the materials are subject to change as the clinic evolves.
Intended for the occupational therapy students, preceptors, and UNMC occupational therapy program, this book serves as a comprehensive guide to establishing and operating a student-led clinic dedicated to serving mental and behavioral health needs.
Purpose
Influenced by a community-based participatory action research approach, the development of this program was a multifaceted effort. It involved conducting a community-engaged needs assessment, obtaining qualitative and quantitative feedback from community stakeholders, and gaining hands-on experience working directly with individuals experiencing mental and behavioral health challenges.
Through this collaborative and immersive process, the program outlined in this book aims to address the identified needs of the community while providing occupational therapy students with a unique opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in the mental and behavioral health setting, under the guidance of experienced preceptors.
