Death Valley Photo Suite for Site 5
Geologic context: In the representative photo suite image below can be seen a late, fine-grained mafic dike that is cut by several slip surfaces. The host rock is a layered gneiss of uncertain age. The outcrop is within what is mapped as the Willow Springs pluton that is syn-kinematic with extension and turtleback formation. It could also be a screen of the older Precambrian basement rocks that are intruded. The former interpretation is favored because of the relatively lack of deformed pegmatites and mafic enclaves common in the PC basement rocks, and the fact that the plutonic rocks are locally commonly foliated. Not in view in this image and to the right is a larger mafic intrusive body of uncertain geometry and in fault contact with these orthogneisses. Epidote mineralization occurs along both simple opening mode fracture zones and along slip surfaces and is visible upon close inspection in this image.
