Bromine and Vanadium

Khadija Mohamed; Peyton Powell; and William Moffitt (illustrator)

Vanadium is a strong, hard-headed man. He is known for his vigilance in the most corrosive of battles. His alliance with steel makes him even stronger and useful. Vanadium is a soldier in this periodic war. Not much can stop him. Vanadium has a friend, Bromi. Bromi is not from the Transition Metal family—he is a halogen. He is red brown in appearance and is a vigilant non-metal. Bromi and Vanadium are friends, but only Vanadium is serving as a soldier.

Bromi is visiting Vanadium’s soldier quarters. They are talking about this periodic war that is occurring in their land. Vanadium is strong and a good soldier, so he is not too worried. He invites Bromi to join the fight, but Bromi declines. Bromi tells Vanadium he is worried for his safety and doesn’t like wartime fighting. After that, Bromi leaves, and Vanadium stays to get ready for tomorrow’s battle.

Today is battle day. Vanadium is preparing in his quarters to fight against the acids. Unexpectedly, Nitric Acid ambushes him! Vanadium is dissolved instantly and Bromi walks in to find his friend dead. Bromi is angry and wants to avenge Vanadium’s death. He decides to go into battle against the acids. Bromi has a special smell power, which he rarely uses, but he wants to use it today against the acids to win the war.

Bromi makes his way to the battlefield. He goes to the front lines and releases his smelly stench, which makes the acids drop dead. He is a hero and all the other elements and Transition Metal soldiers yell, “Hooray!” Bromi is lifted up and celebrated as a war hero and dedicated friend of Vanadium.
