4 Genny’s Save

Nitrogen

Christine Kadaw and Hailey O’Hara

In a small village in Burma, there lives a Kachin heroine. She goes by Nitrogen, but her secret identity is Genny. She was adopted at the age of 7, her lucky number, by her farmer parents. Genny not only helps her parents by making fertilizers, but she also helps the village’s trading system by creating dyes and nylon. As Nitrogen, she can change into either liquid or gas with different abilities in each state. When she is a gas, she is able to heat up and bend steel products. This has allowed her to make better farming tools and have more produce. In her liquid form, she is able to create cooler environments or freeze items which has allowed the village to expand their trading routes and keep produce fresh for longer.

In the village, there were officers who worked with foreign companies to create big farms which took money away from local farmers and markets. They hired bandits to dump the fertilizers into rivers which caused an outbreak of algae to grow. The algae created a thick layer which prevents water from photosynthesizing and turns molecules into oxygen. The villagers became suspicious of the new farmland as they could not water as many crops as they wanted to, but the foreign companies could. Genny heard the complaints and knew she had to help her family and friends from the new threat. As she was the one to create the nitrogen in fertilizers, she was able to retrace the trails and fly around the village as a gas to find the culprits. When she discovered it was the foreign companies, she was devastated. As much as she had the ability to ignore the foreign presence, she knew they would continue to threaten her fellow villagers. She decided as Genny she would start managing river access and as Nitrogen, created special water transporters. She also decided to freeze layers of water to limit unauthorized river access and prevent fertilizer dumping. As she continued to protect the fertilizer and water banks, there was a decrease in industrial farming and the local market and villagers began to thrive again.
