University of Nebraska President Ted Carter announced the recipients of the university system’s prestigious faculty awards, recognizing exceptional contributions in teaching, research, and community engagement. These President’s Excellence Awards celebrate faculty members whose work significantly impacts students, the university, and the broader community. Carter emphasized the vital role of faculty in enhancing the educational experience for over 52,000 students and highlighted their influence on both state and global levels.
Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award (OTICA)
The Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award (OTICA) was awarded to Kenneth Kiewra, Ph.D., from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, who is recognized for developing the “SOAR” teaching method, which focuses on effective learning strategies. Kiewra has authored numerous publications and has been a leader in educational psychology. Ramazan Kılınç, Ph.D., from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, also received this award for his excellence in teaching courses on Middle Eastern politics and his extensive research contributions to the field.
Outstanding Research and Creative Activity (ORCA) Award
The Outstanding Research and Creative Activity (ORCA) Award was presented to Margaret Jacobs, Ph.D., from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, for her impactful research on Indigenous child removal policies and reconciliation efforts between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Nick Stergiou, Ph.D., from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, was also honored for his significant strides in biomechanics research, securing substantial funding to advance the field and improve medical training techniques.
Innovation, Development and Engagement Award (IDEA)
The Innovation, Development and Engagement Award (IDEA) recognized Christine Cutucache, Ph.D., from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, for her work in tumor immunology and science education. She leads initiatives that engage thousands of youth in STEM activities. Laurence Rilett, Ph.D., from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was acknowledged for his outreach efforts in transportation engineering education, particularly programs aimed at underrepresented K-12 students.
