Teaching Note: Digital accessibility is also an issue for us as teachers and for our students. All internet and WiFi access is not created equal. When sharing large files, such as PPTs with video or embedded audio, it is essential to create alternative versions. Imagine a student who lives in a rural area, is international, or has limited internet access. Example: I have a colleague who lives a few miles outside the Omaha metro area, and she shared with me that between 5 pm and midnight and all day on weekends, it takes forever to download items, and they often time out because of slow internet at her location.
If you record using PPT as your recording tool, you should always save the file as an MP4/MPEG-4 video and upload it to your university streaming service or YouTube for streaming. Streaming requires less bandwidth for the students and helps alleviate the download issues.
